Institute for the Historical Geography of the Church in Poland

The mission

The Institute for the Historical Geography of the Church in Poland was founded by Professor Jerzy Kłoczowski. Formally established in 1957 as an agenda of the Learned Society of the Catholic University of Lublin, and since 1968 as an independent scientific-research unit of the Catholic University of Lublin, in 2010 it was incorporated into the structure of the Faculty of Humanities of the University.

The Institute for the Historical Geography of the Church in Poland is the main research center in Poland for the study of the history and spatial organization of the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations in Poland and in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The center implements a research plan on socio-religious geography using new geoinformation technologies (spatial databases and GIS technologies) and conducting publishing series, e.g. Materiały do Atlasu Historycznego Chrześcijaństwa w Polsce (Materials for the Historical Atlas of Christianity in Poland), Studia i Materiały do Historii Chrześcijaństwa w Polsce (Studies and Materials for the History of Christianity in Poland), Geografia Historyczna Kościoła w Polsce (Historical Geography of the Church in Poland).

Since its founding, the Institute has cooperated with various academic centers in Poland and abroad. Among the regular scientific events organized by the Institute is the annual national scientific conference for historians of religious orders.

• Atlas of monasteries in Poland, 10th-21th centuries (2017-2022)

Research project entitled "Atlas of monasteries in Poland, 10th-21st centuries", funded under the National Programme for the Development of Humanities (under contract No. 0273/NPRH5/H11/84/2017). The head of the project is Prof. Henryk Gapski.

• Territorial divisions of the Latin Church in the Republic (X-XXI century). From data harmonization to synthesis (2022-2027)

Research project entitled „Territorial divisions of the Latin Church in the Republic (X-XXI century). From data harmonization to synthesis” funded under the National Programme for the Development of Humanities (under contract No. NPRH/DN/SP/495771/2021/10). The head of the project is Bogumił Szady, director of the Institute.

• Budziarze w Ordynacji Zamojskiej - historia grupy społecznej warunkowanej środowiskowo

Projekt badawczy pt. „Budziarze w Ordynacji Zamojskiej - historia grupy społecznej warunkowanej środowiskowo” finansowany w ramach konkursu PRELUDIUM-BIS Narodowego Centrum Nauki (nr 2021/43/O/HS3/01373). Kierownikiem projektu jest dr hab. Bogumił Szady, prof. KUL, zaś doktorantem mgr Dominik Róg.
